As a descendant of Robert's and one who has done considerable research into the family tree I can tell you that it was James who owned Skead Mills and lived from 1817 to 1884 and not Thomas.
I grew up in Rothwell Heights. Current Blair Road was known as Skead Road until the Township of Gloucester changed the name. AS well, growing up we were told the stone house on current NRC property at the corner of Montreal Rd and Skead (Blair) Rd was a Skead house, as was the stone house used as the Air Force Mess on the cliff overlooking the airfield at Rockcliffe AFB. It would appear that some enlightened bureaucrat has given the go-ahead to tear down Canada's first airforce mess and Gloucester pioneer home....
Again, why hasn't this been corrected. This is James and not Thomas. James and his brother Robert owned land, farms, and the mills as well as bred the 'Skead" horse. If you check the archives you'll find out this picture is incorrectly labeled. It's quite frankly embarrassing to those of us who are his descendants. He was a Senator for heaven's sake!

As a boy, I used to play with my brothers in the remnants of Skead's mills at the bottom of Roosevelt Avenue in Westboro. Our house was built further south on what had been Skead property at one time.
The original Skeads were known for their daring and gentlemanly behaviour. I doubt that William, Robert or James would send a letter back containing expressions such as "excuse me, WHO?, "bogus", or "embarrassing" and would so anonymously.
Might I ask where I can find your research published? Or is that also withheld? Publishing material in hard copy is challenge when you remain anonymous.

I would direct you to the National Archives of Canada, the Topley Collection where you will find an almost identical picture taken by the photographer at the time and labeled James Skead. I will attempt to attach the link but they rarely work well. You will have to search the Topley Collection for Skead if it doesn't. I do, in fact, have an original of the same photo.
